She started to stand, but Tyre put a hand on her arm. “Hang on. We need to do things the right way this time and not just rush in. I’m not taking any more risks with your safety.”
“If your plan is to leave me behind while you save the day, you can forget it. I’m not a damsel in distress.”
Tyre smiled, sending butterflies flying in her stomach. “I know that. I couldn’t leave you behind if I wanted to, which I don’t. Since Charley sent you the safe-deposit box information, I’m guessing your name is listed as an authorized user.”
“Okay, so what are you thinking?”
A light gleamed in his eye. “I have a plan.”
Tyre explained his plan to use decoy cars to elude the men chasing Serena.
“Do you really think this is going to work?” Serena asked as the elevator carried her, Tyre, Ryan West and his brother Shawn, co-owners of West Investigations, and Gideon Wright and Xavier Nichols, two of West Investigations best investigators, down to the basement level in the garage where West kept its fleet of cars.
“I do. These guys know where you work and since we know they were watching Charley's place, it stands to reason they are watching this building, too.”
The elevator doors opened and Serena followed Tyre toward a row of black SUVs with darkly tinted windows.
“There’s still a one in four chance they’ll choose to follow the car we’re in.”
“Way to see the glass half-full,” Tyre said with a wry smile. “What’s most important is that they don’t follow our car to the bank. We don’t know what we’ll find in that safe-deposit box.”
The plan was simple. Four SUVs would leave the garage at the same time, headed in four different directions. Because her assailants had seen Tyre, Ryan would drive while she and Tyre hid in the back seat of the SUV until they were sure they weren’t followed to the bank.
“Ready to roll?” Ryan asked, shooting a glance at them through the rearview mirror.
“Let’s do it,” Tyre answered.
She wasn’t sure she was ready for whatever came next, but she trusted Tyre.
Ryan put the car in gear and headed for the garage’s exit.
Theirs was the third in the four-car lineup. From her hunched-over position, she watched the first car, driven by Shawn West, make a right turn. The second car made a left.
Ryan turned left as well.
She didn’t want to risk being seen, so she couldn’t see which direction the fourth car went, but she had no doubt Xavier would follow the plan.
The bank branch where the safe-deposit box was located wasn’t far from West Investigations headquarters, but it felt as if they drove for twice as long as it should have taken to get there. Finally, Ryan gave the all clear.
Tyre and Serena straightened in the back seat, and a moment later, they arrived at the bank.
