Charlie knew exactly where she’d find her husband. The man had turned Anderson-McCaw Rescue into as near a high-tech wildlife rescue as possible. It was fascinating watching his mind work.
“So, Dev.” She walked in to find him under the desk, wires strewed around him. “What happened here?”
“The pregnancy tracker I set up for the ocelots went haywire. I looked through the code and it produced a human sonogram.”
She should have known better than to try to surprise him with tech. “I literally uploaded that photo this morning. The code is only designed to run for six hours.” One of Dev’s friends had helped her set it up, and Lila had made sure Dev was on a conference call this morning while they hacked his system.
This would already be done if Frank the cougar hadn’t needed emergency treatment for an abscessed tooth.
“Wha?” Dev rolled out, his dark eyes trained on her. Would their son or daughter have his eyes, his smile? She hoped so.
“Why would you upload a human sonogram?” He shook his head as he looked at the code on the screen. “We are tracking—”
His words stopped, but his mouth kept going.
“For such a smart man, I’d have thought it obvious.” She saw his wheels turning, knew he was registering the news. “You weren’t supposed to find the code. I was supposed to pull it up and show you.”
“You’re pregnant.” Dev pursed his lips and pushed a tear from his cheek. “You’re pregnant.” Then he let out a whoop and jumped from the floor. “You’re pregnant!”
“I’m pregnant.” She kissed him, enjoying the strokes of his fingers over her lower belly, where their child grew. “The code expires at—”
“Don’t care.” Dev pressed his lips to her forehead. “I love you so much, Charlie.” Then he bent and kissed her belly. “And I love you, too.”
Perfection. There was no other way to describe this moment. No other place she’d rather be.
