Dev had changed three times before his dinner with Charlie. A dinner date had never been that big of a deal, but this one felt like it.
Charlie was special. Such a lackluster word for the woman he’d been working with over the last few weeks. And her expression yesterday when he’d seen the scars across her stomach. Old scars, faded to nearly skin tone. But still clear…and obviously used against the woman.
Likely ended her modeling career.
They’d stunned him, but only because he knew what they meant. How much hurt and trauma she’d suffered. It did nothing to strip the beauty from her.
“You’re here.” Charlie’s smile lit a place in his heart that Dev wasn’t sure had existed before he’d met her. He’d always told people he was fine on his own, that it was easier because everyone wanted something from him. It was true, but lonely.
“I’m here.” Dev held out his arm, pushing the dark thoughts away as Charlie slid hers through his.
“So, where are we going?” Charlie let out a sigh as she looked at the night sky. “What has Dev McCaw set up?”
Worry pressed at the back of his throat. All the women he’d dated expected lavish first dates. The price of making your first million before sixteen. He hated the expectation, and he’d chosen differently tonight. But if he’d chosen wrong…
“We are going on another picnic since our last one got interrupted.”
“Oh!” There was genuine excitement in her voice. “Did you make cheese sandwiches like I did?”
He couldn’t contain his laugh. “No, though I guess my worry that you wouldn’t be impressed was unnecessary.”
“You don’t need to impress me, Dev. You do that just by being you.” Her lips brushed his cheek, and she pulled back quickly. “I…”
He wrapped his arms around her. “If you are about to apologize for that kiss, don’t.” Dev waited a moment, then added, “Unless it’s to say it was too short.”
“Dev.” Her body leaned into his, a light blush coating the freckles along her cheeks. She was the most beautiful woman he’d ever laid eyes on. “Kiss me.”
Two words that made his soul cry out. Bending his head, he brought his lips to hers. She softened in his arms, letting out a moan as she opened her mouth.
He’d been right. She was sweet and fiery. All the right things mixed together. Her body molded to his, her arms going around his neck, wiping away any distance between them. He was lost in her taste, in the feel of her against him. Pleasure, perfection and desire wrapped around him, calling out the same sweet thing.
Charlie.
When she finally broke the kiss, her lips were slightly swollen and his aching need for her had gone from a bonfire to a raging inferno.
“Dinner?” Her teeth caught her bottom lip and Dev nodded, not yet trusting his voice.
