Chapter 16
Heat rushed to Ellie’s face. She didn’t want to admit it, especially not to someone who looked like Ben. He was so damn handsome that he probably had to fight women off instead of struggling to find a date, like she’d struggled.
“Is it because of your job?” he asked.
In a way it was, because of her moving around and her long hours working, she hadn’t had much time to look for her prince, so she’d joined the online dating community.
“I know a lot of people hate the IRS,” he said. “But your employers denied you having any threats.”
“It’s not because of my job,” she said. “I audit companies. Not individuals, so nobody’s threatened me because of work.”
He narrowed his dark eyes and stared at her, waiting.
Her throat had been dry since she woke up from the coma; it was even dryer now. She cleared it and confessed, “I put myself on a dating app.”
“A lot of people use dating apps.”
She doubted that he did. “I know. They find their soul mates. I find a bunch of frogs.”
“Did one of these frogs threaten you?”
She shook her head. “Not that I remember...but I don’t know who else it could be. Because it’s not someone close to me.”
“You’re not seriously dating anyone you met?” he asked.
She stared at him for a moment, wondering if he had another reason for asking, if he was interested in her at all. But then she remembered how much he’d wanted to leave her. He was only interested in finding her assailant so he could end this assignment—with her.
“I told you. They were all frogs.”
His dark eyes glinted with amusement and maybe something else. Jealousy? “Did you know that before or after you kissed them?”
“Fortunately before.” She hadn’t wanted to kiss any of them. She wanted to kiss him, though—so badly.
And maybe the same thought was crossing his mind because he leaned toward her, his mouth just a breath away from hers.
