Chapter 10
Anna didn’t know who reached for whom. Or who initiated the wild frenzy of their needy mouths tangling with each other.
This moment had been as certain as the monsoon drenching the hungry earth after a scorching summer. As powerful as the sacred hymns they had chanted when she and AJ had walked around fire at their wedding. Anna had no understanding of the words themselves, but the institution they upheld had touched her.
Their kiss was as sweetly life-giving as the memories she had of her father and mother walking her to the church on Christmas Eve.
All she knew was that she was glad of this no-holds-barred kiss. She’d desperately needed it. His hands on her hips, AJ pulled her closer until she was plastered to the hard contours of his body. His hunger amplified hers a thousandfold, his rough groan when he let them breathe spreading honey-like passion all the way to her limbs.
The hungry glide of their tongues, the urgent rasp of their lips, the erotic pleasure pain of teeth digging into tingling flesh… It all made her feel as if the part of her that had been dead and buried for nine months was growing again.
God, she’d forgotten how much she loved AJ’s kisses, how incredibly freeing and perversely binding his passion was. She filled her hands with his hair, a strange urgency driving her.
It felt like if she didn’t take everything he was giving now, she might never have it again. As if this was the last time she could feel the rough scrape of his jaw against hers, the muscled landscape of his back under her fingers, the powerful clench of his thighs anchoring hers.
“I’ve forgotten how incredibly sweet you taste, sweetheart,” he said in a growling whisper against her pulse. “How eagerly you give and greedily you demand.”
Her sex clenched as he tugged the tender skin with his teeth and released it with a pop. The wet, soothing glide of his tongue against the hurt did nothing to cool Anna’s flushed skin. The soft silk of her bra felt like a silken trap against her heavy breasts.
Only when she slowly untangled her leg from his hip did Anna realize that she’d wrapped her leg around him like a vine.
Embarrassment had her hiding her face in his chest. A part of her wanted to demand that he see this through to its conclusion. She was hungry for him. Hungry for the mind-numbing pleasure of having him move inside her.
Feeling bolstered by the hardness against her belly, she looked up to ask him just that.
Implacability in his gaze, he pulled away. Maybe he’d sensed her hurt, because he pressed a gentler kiss to her sensitive lips. Having lost the warmth of his body, Anna felt cold to her core.
“Much as I’d like to see this through,” he said, stepping back, increasing the distance between them, “I won’t do something you regret in the morning, Anna.”
“I won’t regret it,” she replied, without missing a beat. “This was the one place where I had all of you, AJ. I will never regret one night, one caress, one kiss.”
His eyes darkened, but the tension in him didn’t seem to lessen. “There’s too much hurt between us now, sweetheart. And it will come in here,” he said, waving a hand between them, “and it will rot this, too. I’m sure will you agree with me that that’s quite unacceptable.”
And then he was gone, leaving Anna feeling confused and close to tears.
It wasn’t until she had settled into her large, comfortable bed that she realized that he hadn’t known her grandmother had been sick. It had been in his eyes.
His sister had never told him of Anna’s call.
He hadn’t known or he’d have shown up. He would have. The sudden relief that filled her had no bounds.
Hope fluttered in Anna’s chest as she fell asleep savoring the imprint of AJ’s warm kisses for one more night.
Was there a chance to fix their broken relationship? Did she want to?
