“Do you want sit, babe?” Silas asked from behind her. “You’re very tense.”
“I’m upset,” Janelle said. “You sit.” Silas must have sensed her frustration. He gave her some room and did as she told him, making himself comfortable on one of the tufted couches.
On the drive over, all Janelle could think about was the birthdays, anniversaries and holidays they’d missed because of Brad’s interference. Though she couldn’t entirely hold Brad responsible. She and Silas were both to blame. They’d been so proud, so stubborn, refusing to give an inch. They still were. Silas had shown up with a major chip on his shoulder at the photo shoot. But what about all the others he’d missed? She knew modeling was not his dream, but he could have stayed with her, tried to figure it out.
Hell, if he had, she and Silas could have had a family by now. Her hand flew to her stomach. She’d always wanted to have children someday with Silas and give them all the love she and Silas had never had, but then they’d separated. Over the years, she’d wondered if the day would ever come that a little face would look up at her and call her Mommy. Could she still be one? Could she and Silas make a go of their marriage again? Or was she fooling herself because she wanted to turn back the clock?
“Janelle, my darling!” Brad called out in a singsong voice as he approached her. Brad’s blond hair was coiffed perfectly, and he wore a bespoke suit and hand-stitched shoes. “What are you doing here? I thought we weren’t meeting until—” He stopped midsentence when he saw Silas sitting in the lobby. “What on earth is he doing here?”
Silas rose to his feet, and with his height and frame, he towered over the older, stockier gentlemen. “He is reuniting with his wife, no thanks to you.” Silas took a step toward him, but Janelle placed a hand on his arm.
“I’ve got this, Silas.” Janelle turned to Brad. “I’d like to speak with you in private.”
“Of course, my darling,” Brad said. “Come, we’ll speak in my office.” He turned on his heel to leave but not before glaring at Silas. “Is he coming?”
“You bet your behind he is.” Janelle walked behind Brad as he led them down the hall to his office.
“What’s this all about?” Brad asked once the door was closed.
“It’s about the poor girl with low self-esteem I was six years ago who you manipulated, but I’m no ingenue anymore, Brad. I know you and this agency conspired to conceal Silas’s attempts to reconcile with me, and I’m here to tell you that you didn’t succeed. We’re still married.”
“Ohmigod!” Brad’s hand flew to his mouth.
“And one more thing, Brad. You’re fired.” Words had never felt so good on Janelle’s lips. She turned to Silas and held out her hand. “Ready to go, hubby?”
Silas grinned at her before clasping her hand in his and leading her out of the office.
